From global to local: A new truth commission in the United States

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

Last month, the state of Maryland made history as it launched a truth commission to investigate racial terror lynchings in the state, from 1854 to 1933. Lab director, Kelebogile Zvobgo joined a group of distinguished speakers at the commission’s public launch, including Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Maryland House Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk (21st District)—the primary sponsor of HB 307, which created the commission.

Following individual presentations, Ifill, Peña-Melnyk, and Zvobgo participated in a roundtable discussion moderated by Ronald Weich, the Dean of the University of Baltimore Law School. The panelists also received questions from the audience. A summary of the presentations and roundtable discussion is available from The Baltimore Sun.
